Abstract
The need to improve proficiency in the written and spoken English of students in Nigeria has beer] the cry of many. Much research work has been carried out to investigate the use of English among students in Nigeria, decent work in the area is on the use of English among university students and the results of such studies have shown that theere is the need for improvement. The present work complements what other researchers have done. It investigates the use of 'concord' among students of tertiary institutions. Three types of concord are treated in this study. They are: (a) Subject-Verb Concord. (b) Pronoun-Antecedent Concord. (c) Tense Concord, One hundred subjects divided into four groups were drawn from three institotions of kaduna State to write a test. Out of this number, 34%-38% used sentences that lack concord with respect to subjects and their verbs. 23%-33% of the subjects used sentences that lack pronoun-antecedent concord and 53%-60% of the subjects used sentences that lackof concord, tense concord seems to present the greatest difficulty to students. Concord seems to be an area of difficulty to students and this has pedagogical implications for students, teachers and education planners. The study is divided into five chapters. Chapter one states the aims of the study, the need for it and also gives the definition of concord. Chapter two gives the theoretical frame work and literature review. It also discusses the model used in the study. The third chapter discusses the research procedure for collecting data. Chapter four gives the analysis of data and attempts some discussions of the results and chapter five gives the conclusion of the study. There is also a bibliography and appendices. tense concord.
