dc.description.abstractThis study was undertaken to explore the possibility or otherwise of conducting invasive (gastrotomy) and non invasive (intergumentry (H-plasty)) surgical procedures following subcutaneous administration of ketamine hydrochloride in dogs. Twenty four (24) Nigerian indigenous dogs were used for the study, 10 underwent integumentry (H-plasty) procedures, while 10 underwent gastrotomy procedures. They were premedicated with chlorpromazine at a dose of 3.0 mg/kg and atropine at a dose of 0.03 mg/kg, employing the intravenous and intramuscular routes respectively. Ketamine was administered subcutaneously at an initial dose of 10 mg/kg and the dogs evaluated for surgical anaesthesia using standard assessment protocol and thereafter subjecting them to the above mentioned surgical procedures. During surgery, basic anaesthetic parameters were monitored and recorded. A concurrent observational study was carried out on four other Nigerian indigenous dogs; they were premedicated with chlorpromazine at a dose of 3.0 mg/kg, atropine at a dose of 0.03 mg/kg intravenously and intramuscularly respectively and anaesthetized with thiopental intravenously at an initial dose of 10 mg/kg. Being the standard anaesthetic protocol used at the Ahmadu Bello University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Small Animal Surgery Unit. At the end of the study, 10 mg/kg single administration and 14.5 mg/kg total multiple administration of ketamine were judged adequate for integumentry and gastrotomy procedures respectively.en_US
