Abstract
Resistivity and radiometric methods of survey employing
vertical electrical soundings (VES), and gamma ray
spectrometry were carried out in the Wikki Warm Spring area.
These were used with the aim of investigating the source of
heat which Teats the water in the Wikki Warm Spring.
Within the Wikki warm spring area, fourteen (14)
soundings were carried out using the conventional VES method.
Radiometric; measurements were carried out from which the
concentrations of the three radio-elements K, U, and Th in
the area were estimated. These surveys were carried out with
the aim of identifying the origin of the source of heat which
heats the water in the Wikki warm spring, the investigation
was also concerned with the point where this heating takes
place, that is, whether the water is heated in the immediate
vicinity of the spring or at some distant point.
Results from the interpretation of the data obtained led
to the production of a number of graphs and maps from which
conclusions were drawn. The resistivity results show that
rather low resistivity values exist around the Wikki Spring
area. This was interpreted as indicating that the Wikki area
is underlain by water. The low resistivity values were
recorded further away from the point where water is gushing
out from the spring. The radiometric survey measurements
reveal high gamma activity in this region. This higher than
average radioactivity in the area is indicative of the
viii
importance of radiogenic heat in the Wikki area. The high
concentration of the radioelements K, U, Th points to the
fact that the source heat of the Wikki warm spring is most
probably due to the radioactivity
