SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF DUMPSITES IN DOKA AND GABASAWA DISTRICTS OF KADUNA METROPOLIS, NIGERIA

Abstract
Soild waste dumpsites is a global environmental issue and constitute problem in today‟s world. The study identified and mapped the legal and illegal dumpsites in the area and also analyzed the proximity of the dumps to residence in the area. The GPS ( Garmin map 60) was used to collect the coordinates of the dumpsites. The data collected from the field were analyzed using the ArcGIS 9.3 software. Buffer of 200m, 300m, and 400m were constituted to show the proximity of the dumpsites to residences. The result of the analysis revealed that most of the dumpsites were situated close to the residential area and most were within the radius of 200 meters. Also questionnaire was used to generate opinions of the residents on the methods of solid waste disposal and the effects on the surrounding; the data collected was analysed using excel and SPSS software. The results showed that most of the wastes generated from these dumpsites are in form of polythene bags, plastic bottles, plastic bottles all generated. It furthers shows that there are no formal disposal dumpsites in Doka and Gabasawa most of the legal dumpsites are located within the Central Business Districts and high income earners residential areas, in low income areas both municipal and industrial wastes are disposed in an uncontrolled manner. Based on the foregoing it was recommended that sensitization of the general public on the dangers associated with indiscrimate refuse disposal should be put into practice.
