Abstract
This study presents findings on the livelihood coping strategies of female headed households
(FHHs). The study analysed the livelihood coping strategies of female headed households in
Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Data for the study was derived from the
administration of a structured questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion. A total of 326
respondents were sampled, which formed the basis for analysis. Data were analysed using a
computer soft ware, SPSS. Version 17. The study reveals that the female heads of households
were 50 years and above, 40.5% were widows, 81% were Hause / Fulani and 93% Muslims. In
terms of education, findings show that there were more female heads (35.6%) with tertiary
education. Among the employed, 24.2% are civil servants and 35.9%, lived on less than #5000
per month. Livelihood activities among the female heads of households were low- income
generating activities. Majority of the female heads of households engage in domestic labour as
household survival strategies. This study recommends that the standard of living of FHHs should
be improved and should be supported with positive livelihood strategies. This could be done by
identifying and coordinating with relevant agencies to provide skills training, agricultural support
and income generating projects, which will reduce indiscipline and delinquency among children
in the female headed households.
