Abstract
The hydrogeology of the DutsenWai Sheet 125 NE was studied based on the knowledge of hydrogeology, geology, Remote sensingand geophysical interpretation of VES data. This was done in order to determine the groundwater potential of the area. The geological maps and the hydrogeological maps were updated and the groundwater movement at the end ofwet and peak of dry seasons were determined. The aquifer characteristics and the water quality were determined.Theaverage value of transmissivityis 0.34m2/day while the mean value of hydraulic conductivity and specific capacity are2.934 and 9.14 x 10-2 m2/s respectively. 22 samples of groundwater were analysed using Atomic Absorbtion Spectrometry (AAS) and flame photometery to determine the major element Na,K, Ca,Mg and trace elements Cu,Zn and Pb while the anions Cl-,SO42-, HCO3- and NO32- were determined by spectrophotometric methods. The result obtained from field and petrographical studies show that the major rocks types of the area are migmatite, biotite granite, ignimbrite. The ground water analysis shows that the temperature has a mean annual average of 27oC, conductivity is 21.2mS/m, pH is averaged at 9.43, Total Dissolved Solids is ranged between 2.8 to 385mg/l, Dissolved Oxygen is 3.2mg/l. Turbidity is ranged between 2.8 and 4.6 NTU. For cation analysis, sodium and potassium ranged between 2.0 to 68mg/l and 2.80 to 20mg/l respectively. Calcium and magnessium ranges between 0.6 to 59.183ppm and 0,448 to 8.572mg/l respectively. Cupper ranges from 0.00 to 0.071mg/l and Zinc has a concentration that ranges from 0.004mg/l to 0.07mg/l and Lead is below detection limit for all samples analysed. For the Anions, chloride ranges between 0.40 to 5.90mg/l, Sulphate is very small ranging between 0.5 to 13.75mg/l, bicarbonates range between 0.333 to 8.2004mg/l and nitrates concentration in water sample ranges from 6.0 to 12.0mg/l. The lineament analysis deduced were processed to generate the lineament density map, lineament length and dominant trend within the area. The results show that the groundwater in the study area is potable and suitable for domestic, agricultural and domestic uses
