Abstract
The growth performance of Clarias garicpinus fingcrlings cultured in different experimental containers were investigated. One hundred and fifty fingcrlings obtained from the Ahmadu Bcllo University reservoir were used for the study. The fingcrlings were led with the same experimental diet in live different experimental containers namely clay pots, plastic baths, aluminium pots, water baths and glass aquaria. The glass aquaria served as the control. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory in 30 litres of dechlorinated tap water in each
experimental container for eight weeks. Water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and total hardness were monitored. Low mortality rale was observed during the experimental period. Growth and nutrient utilization indices viz Mean Weight Gain (MWG), Specific Growth Rate (SGR%), Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) and Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER), Feed Efficiency (FE), Apparent Net Protein Ulilizatioin (ANPU), Nitrogen Metabolism (NM), were calculated. The initial mean body weights of 0.7Sg to l.08g were fed 5% of the body weights in the different experimental containers. The llngerlings had significantly (P<0.05) high increase in mean weight in all the five containers as Clay pots (2.43g), Plastic baths (2.28g),
Aluminium pots (2.94g), Water baths (2.l4g) , Glass aquaria ( 2.84g). The best growth and nutrient utilization were observed in the fingcrlings cultured in the experimental container C, aluminum pots with significantly higher values (P<0.05) for Mean Weight Gain (MWG) and Specific Growth Rale. (SGR). The fish cultured in experimental container D, water baths had theleast Mean Weight Gain (MWG) and Specific Growth Rale (SGR). The results, suggest thai any of these containers may be used for culturing fish in the school laboratories.
