dc.description.abstractRadioactivity measurement was carried out in water and sediments of river Yobe. Sediment samples collected from areas of high fishing, farming, domestic/livestock and control area along the river were analyzed using gamma-ray spectrometric technique. The average absorbed dose rate of the samples was 50.00nGyh-1, 64.10nGyh-1, 46.79nGyh-1 and 40.12nGyh-1 for fishing, farming, domestic/livestock and control zone respectively. Mean dose rate equivalent, external and internal indices were also computed. The water samples were analyzed for gross alpha and beta activity with an average values of 0.153±0.06, 0.638±0.06, 0.207±0.04 and 0.207±0.07 BqL-1 for gross alpha and 0.245±0.02, 0.679±0.05, 0.393±0.03 and 0.293±0.05 BqL-1 for gross beta for the zones respectively. The overall results showed that activity concentrations of all zones are within the typical world average values of 0.5Bq/L and 1Bq/L for alpha and beta respectively, although some extreme values are obtained in the farming zone. Therefore the river, have no significance radiological health burden on the environment and the populace.en_US
