dc.description.abstractThis thesis details the investigation and analysis of the current manual administration of Ahmadu Bello University personnel records. Problems and inefficiencies associated with this manual system are identified. Analysis of these problems clearly indicates that some computing power could be explored to handle the University's personnel records administration. The proximity of the institution's Mainframe Computer System (CYBER 72) situated few meters away from her main administrative building is a big factor that further underscores to a large extent the "feasibility of this exploration since the facilities at the Computer Centre could be used to advantage in implementing the new system. A careful study of the facilities obtainable on the University's CYBER 72 computer enabled me to recommend that, a strictly data processing activity which involves the MAINTENANCE OF AN INTEGRATED DATA BASE (instead of a COMMON DATA BASE) is the most economically feasible approach. Based on this recommendation, a Computer-based information system entitled "COMPUTERISED - ix - PERSONNEL INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY" is designed. Sample data used during the development of the system was collected from the Registry unit of Ahmadu Bello University. Due in particular to the appalling- failure rates (due to old-age') of the University’s present computer System, and the unreliable power supply witnessed towards the tail end of completing this project, it became nearly impossible to get serious work done by the computer, thus, exhaustive implementation could not be effected. If the University so desires, full implementation could be carried out when the new Computer System being proposed is purchased and installed.en_US
