dc.description.abstractA number of large scale industries in Kaduna metropolis are closed down while the few still in business are producing below capacity. On the other hand small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) are springing up all over the metropolis. The question then is, are they sustainable? What type of SMES are emerging in Kaduna metropolis, what are the major constraint faced by these enterprises, what factors are necessary for their sustainability, to what extent are these factor being embraced by the industrialist and what role should the government play towards the sustainability of these industries? This study therefore examines the sustainability of small and medium scale enterprises in Kaduna metropolis. Random sampling technique was used to select 36 enterprises within the metropolis. Oral and written interviews were conducted with the management staff of selected SMES to collect information on location factors, funding sources, employment, strategies to sustain production and constraints to effective development. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of this study show that the emerging SMES in Kaduna metropolis are putting in efforts to achieve sustainability such as the use of alternative power supply , installation of additional machinery, employment of more workers , selling at discount and , price reduction. The study further shows that the sustainability of emerging SMES in Kaduna metropolis is greatly threatened by poor funding, inadequate power supply, high dependence on imported raw materials, low managerial skill of the entrepreneurs and ethno- religious crisis. The findings of this study show that SMEs in Kaduna metropolis are not sustainable. Based on the finding the recommendation are, the government should intensify their efforts to ensure adequate power supply, the government through the ministry of industries should put in more effort to ensure adequate access to affordable loan facilities and education of entrepreneurs on the need for backward integration. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and religious bodies should also intensify efforts to ensure peaceful co-existence within the state.en_US
