Abstract
In this work a densitometer was designed and constructed locally, using
available materials for quality assurance tests of X-ray machine. A Light
Dependent Resistor (LDR) was used to convert light intensity to electrical current.
The current, which is proportional to the intensity of light, was measured with a
very sensitive digital multimeter. The electric current in LDR when light intensity
changes was examined. X-ray films were exposed to various X-ray doses. The
optical density of the films was measured with the constructed densitometer. The
range of optical densities for low and high doses respectively in radiography was
found to be between about 0.35 and 2.5. The base of X-ray films contributes an
optical density of about 0.207 + 0.001. Different X-ray films exposed to the same
X-ray energy and processed under different condition have different values of
optical densities.. The output of X-ray unit was found to be dependent on Currentlime,
Film Focus Distance, and Peak kilovollage. The densitometer is easy to
operate, giving values of optical density as
Optical Density=1.578log (iu/i)
