This analytical study was carried out on eight well-water
samples from various locations in Samaru and Zaria town; two dam
water samples from Zaria water works and Jos, one stream water
sample from Gubuchi-Makarfi-Kaduna; the laboratory tap water in
A.B.U., treated water sample from Zaria water works; and industrial
effluent samples from nine different industries in Kaduna, Kano
and Jos. These include the Superphosphate Fertilizer Company,
Arewa and United Nigeria Textiles, Asbestos Company and Nigerian
Breweries, all at Kakuri, Kaduna; Others are North Breweries in
Kano, Brytex Soap and Detergent Company and Makeri Tin Smelting
Company at Jos,
The samples were analyzed for chemical factors such as total
solids, alkalinity, total hardness, dissolved oxygen (D.O.),
Biochemical oxygen demand (B.O.D.), total nitrogen, residual
chlorine, sulphide and sulphate contents, metal ion contents which
included sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, lead, iron
and zinc. The effect of coagulating agents on the suspended solid
contents of the water samples was also determined.
Prom the data collected an attempt has been made to
(a) enumerate how the various water samples analyzed compare
with each other, and how they measure up to stipulated
quality standards of potable water for domestic and industrial uses.
(b) compare the quality of treated and untreated water
samples.
(c) investigate quality or chemical contents of some
effluent waste waters and their effects on some sources
of urban water supplies.
