dc.description.abstract | This study was designed to provide information that might be useful for secretaries-in-training and secretaries already working in either the private or public sector or in the parastatals in appreciating the need for the acquisition of automated skill training in performing office tasks. The population of this study consisted of 200 secretaries who have been using manual typewriters in their respective offices. The sample of the study consisted of 40 secretaries, randomly selected, adopting the simple random sampling technique from the above population. The study determined the effect of training in automated office* equipment on secretaries' job performance. The treatment was the introduction of the experimental group to Information Processing on IBM Wheelwriter 50 Series II Electronic Typewriters. The results of the study indicated that secretaries who acquired automated skill training were able to produce mailable correspondence faster and more accurately on electronic typewriters than secretaries who did not acquire automated skill training. Moreover, being a male or a female secretary is not a barrier in acquiring automated skil training. It was also established that a secretary who has been making use of manual typewriter for a long time can still acquire automated skill training. Age was not an impediment for the acquisition of automated skill training. It was recommended that: 1. Emphasis should be placed upon hands-onexperience in automated office equipment by secretaries-in-training, while on-the-job training facilities should be provided for secretaries trained with manual typewriters to enable them fit into their new work environment - automated office. 2. Maintenance workshop should also be established in every school where automated office equipment is mounted for their proper care and maintenance. 3. Secretarial studies teachers should also be current about the development and improvement in the area of automated office equipment. | en_US |
