The influence of some GABAergic agents on drug-induced stereotyped behaviour as a model of DA activation was studied in conscious young chicks. Apomorphine and d-amphetamine produced dose-dependent stereotyped behaviour and d-amphetamine was observed to be less potent in producing this effect and in addition produced postural changes in the chicks. Gama-aminobutyric acid (GABA), aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA), gama-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) 4,5,6 7-tetrahydroisoxazolo 5,4-c-pyridin- 3-ol (THIP) produced behavioural depression and sedation in chicks especially at lower doses while the GABA antagonist, bicuculine produced behavioural excitation, Pretreatment of chicks with GABA, THIP, AOAA and GHB antagonized apomorphine and d-amphetamineinduced stereotyped behaviour while bicuculine potentiated the stereotypies induced by both drugs and also antagonized the effects of GABA, THIP and AOAA on apomorphine-induced stereotyped behaviour. EEG studies using the GABAergic drugs on their own and in combination with the DA agonists substantiated the behavioural observations above. Effect of some catecholaminergic agents on influence of GABAergic drugs on apomorphine and d-amphetamine-induced stereotyped behaviour were studied in chicks.en_US
