Abstract
The research work assessed the level of awareness of counsellor’s
duties and responsibilities among secondary school students in Zaria
metropolis. The research was motivated by the researcher’s observation on
the low level of awareness of counsellors’ duties and responsibilities among
secondary school students in Zaria.
The subjects of the study were senior secondary schools in Zaria
metropolis. The populations for the study were 30,000 from which a sample
of 540 respondents comprised. The instruments used for data collection on
level of awareness of counsellors duties and responsibilities were
questionnaire constructed by the researcher. The validity of the
instrument was ascertained by experts in psychological testing. The
instrument was personally administered by the researcher to the
respondents. T-test statistics was used to test the six hypotheses at 0.05
level of significance. The result of the data analyzed revealed that one
hypothesis was retained while five hypotheses were rejected. There was no
significant difference on the level of awareness of counsellors’ duties and
responsibilities with regards to observed and expected mean scores,
gender, age, religion and private and public variables. The findings also
revealed that most of the secondary school students do not patronize the
counsellors in their schools. Students should be made to know the
importance of counsellors in the school. Also the principal should be
educated on the need to encourage student to approach counsellors
whenever they are faced with problems
