The work presented here is a study of the fibre characteristics, infrared spectra, mechanical and absorption/chemical properties of three Nigerian Cotton varieties. Single fibre and bundle tensile properties of raw, scoured and mercerized (treatments with 17.5% and 24% of Sodium Hydroxide solution) samples were determined. Fibre fineness, maturity, staple length, degree of convolutions, maximum length of convolutions in a fibre test length, unswollen ribbon width and swollen ribbon width were also determined. An attempt is made to relate infrared spectra, crystallinity and fibre characteristics measurements to mechanical behaviour. Significant differences in specific stress, initial modulus and extension between the three samples were observed and these differences have been attributed to differences in crystallite sizes and orientation. From such relations it is suggested that crystallite size varies for different samples. The results suggest that crystalline size may increase in the order Samcot-8 > Samcot-9 > Samcot-10. Conversely, the Fraction of free hydroxyl groups should decrease in the same order. It has also been observed that of the three varieties studied Samcot-10 is the most susceptible to alkali treatment and suffer the greatest change especially in specific stress and extension under the processing treatment.en_US
