dc.description.abstractThe Maru belt is one of the schist belt located in NW Nigeria that exhibits complex structural patterns as a consequence of poly metamorphism. The structural geometry of the rocks within the study area has been investigated by analysis of different structural elements from mega, meso, to micro scale using satellite imagery, fieldwork and photomicrographs respectively. The study reveals that the area encompasses the imprints of lineaments and multiple phases of folding. The extracted lineaments reveal a NNE – SSW trend reflecting early Pan – African Orogeny and exhibits some uniform breaks indicating E – W fault/fracture lines. The first generation folds (F1) though very rare are light, isoclinal or reclined. The second generation folds (F2) are light to open, isoclinal and co-axial with the F1 folds. The widespread nature of folds controls the structural configuration of the Dan-Zara and Yar’awala hill antiforms which were formed during E – W compressional episode of the Eburnean Orogeny. The third generation folds (F3) are open and appear in form of synform around Dan-Jukku village (Dan-Jukku synform), reflecting the late Pan-African Orogeny (NE – SW). The rocks of the study area show heterogeneity in the bulk strain and the orientation is essentially concordant to the metamorphic deformation connected with the latter but brittle Pan – Africa and predominantly NE – SW fracture system. At least three deformational episodes have been identified in the Maru belt corresponding to D1, D2 and D3 structuresen_US
