A comparative study is carried out into the properties of plain woven fabrics produced from a range of ring and rotor-spun yarns produced at different twist levels. From the study of the fabric properties, it is apparent that yarns produced by both spinning techniques have different physical properties for the same fibre. This is reflected in the behaviour of the fabrics produced from these yarns. The nature and trend of these effects are discussed. As a result of dyeing, the crimp, thickness, cover factor, fabric dimension and extension are altered, which consequently affects other fabric parameters such as air permeability, strength, bending and abrasion characteristics. The changes after dyeing and different yarn characteristics lead to a considerable difference in fabric properties. Based on the laboratory evaluation of the fabric properties, an attempt was made to predict the end-use performance of the produced fabrics. It is shown that fabrics produced from rotor-spun yarn compare favourably with conventional ring-spun fabrics. If the comparison is made at commercially used twist factors, then it is shown that the unique properties of rotor-spun yarns may result in fabrics which offer advantages over conventional fabricsen_US
