| dc.description.abstract | The study investigated consumers' information awareness on veterinary drug residues in broiler chicken for healthy consumption in Sabon Gari Local Government Area. To achieve the objectives of this study three objectives were set, focusing on the information valued by consumers, their level of awareness about drug residues, and challenges in seeking information. The study emphasizes the need for timely, relevant, and accurate consumer information to facilitate healthier consumption and informed decision-making. This study adopts a quantitative methodology, the cross-sectional survey research design was used. The population comprises of 427, 869 within the Sabon Gari Local Government Area. A sample size of 384 respondents was selected using simple random sampling. Data was collected through hard copy questionnaires, and statistical analysis was used to present the findings in terms of percentages, frequency counts, and means. Findings revealed that consumers value information on broiler chicken size, consumers’ value information on health effects of veterinary drug residues, and consumers’ value information on broiler chicken nutrient content. While some certain percentage of respondents’ express awareness of the use of veterinary drugs in broiler chicken production and their potential harm to consumers, a higher percentage of respondents expresses lack of awareness regarding drug residues in meat and associated illnesses. The study concluded that lack of consumers' information awareness on veterinary drug residues can be addressed by providing timely and accurate information to consumers prior to or at the point of purchase to ensure healthy consumption of broiler chickens. It is therefore recommended that Information professionals should spearhead consumer education initiatives highlighting the significance of information in making informed choices about broiler chicken. An awareness campaigns aimed at enhancing consumers' comprehension of veterinary drug residues in broiler chicken should be orchestrated by Information professionals, strengthening information access challenges. | |
