Abstract
Hydrogeological study of Kankara and the surrounding area was carried out. This involved locating rock outcrops on map to produce geological map, measurement of the static water level in hand-dug wells to produce groundwater configuration maps, and collection of water samples for physico-chemical analysis. Rock units in the study area are migmatite, granite-gneiss, and biotite granite. These rock units were located on the map with the help of a satellite navigator (GPS) and a compass clinometer. These rocks of the area have been subjected to various episodes of metamorphism and tectonism resulting to development of structural features favourable for groundwater accumulation. The major trends of fractures in the area are NNE-SSW and NNW-SSE directions. Groundwater level measurement was carried out in hand dug wells within the study area. This involves taking measurements of water level in the hand dug wells as well as the elevations and the coordinates of these wells. Groundwater level fluctuation in the water table (phreatic) aquifer and direction of groundwater flow directions were determined.
Eleven water samples were collected and analysed for their physic-chemical constituents. Water budget for the study area was prepared. This entails the water demand and available water resources of the area. The current water demand is 8,600 m3/d or 3,139,302 m3/a for the estimated population of 122,869 people in the study area. The future water demand in 30 years from the last population census is 21,154 m3/d or 7,721,414 m3/a at the growth rate of 3 % of people of the study area. The utilizable groundwater resources of the study area is 9,466,875 which is sufficient to meet the present as well as the future water demand of people in the study area.Aquifer characteristics obtained from pumping test data indicate yield ranges from 32.83 to 40.61 m3/day, Storativity ranges from 0.0147 to 0.0652 and transmissivity within the aquifers in the area range from 0.68 to 2.98 m2/day corresponding to very low to low Transmissivity
