dc.description.abstractThe s p a t i a l v a r i a t i o n of the neutron f i e l d in the c y l i n d r i c a l c a v i t y above a 5 - c u r i e Am-241/Be source, i n s t a l l e d in a p a r a f f i n wax ' h o w i t z e r ' has been c h a r a c t e r i s e d using the neutron a c t i v a t i o n a n a l y t i c al method. The neutron flux monitors used are aluminium and i n d i um f o i l s . A t h i r d o r d e r p o l y n o m i a l was o b t a i n e d from a f i t of t h e a x i a l n e u t r o n flux d i s t r i b u t i o n c u r v e , and t h e a p p l i c a t i o n of t h is p o l y n o m i a l , in e s t i m a t i n g t h e a v e r a g e n e u t r o n flux w i t h i n a bulk sample t h a t is being i r r a d i a t e d , was d i s c u s s e d . For the sake of comparison, a t h e o r e t i c al e s t i m a t i o n of the neutron flux d i s t r i b u t i o n was a l so c a r r i e d out, using the elementary d i f f u s i o n e q u a t i o n. F i n a l l y , the work discussed the unique a p p l i c a t i o n of i s o t o p i c neutron sources in q u a l i t y c o n t r o l , using the f a s t neutron t h e r m a l i s a t i o n methoden_US
