Abstract
The importance of special collections for academic and research work was emphasiszed. Their diversity, richness in raw data and rarity continue to make them a gold mine for researchers. The inability of libraries to meet their normal acquisition targets due to the depressed national economy is underscored. The present individualistic approaches to collection building must be reviewed to give way to a more institutionally relevant, geographieally-meaningfully co-ordinated effort. This is in view of a survey of Nigerian Federal Universities which reveals gaps in the acquisition of special collections. A review of past efforts at cooperation shows discontinuity and inadequate planning. Suggestions are proferred for a more meaningful acquisition, processing and administration of special collections in Nigerian University Libraries.
