The prevalence rate of antibodies to African swine fever virus (ASFV) in parts of Plateau and Kaduna states was investigated by indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA). Of a total of 590 pig sera tested from Plateau state, 15 (2.5%) tested positive to ASFV antibodies. ASFV antibodies were detected in serum samples from 3 out of the 4 local government areas of the southern part of Kaduna state with Kaduna south local government area having the highest rate of 29.4% and Jama'a having the lowest rate of 6%. None or the serum samples from Kachia local government area had antibodies to ASFV. The sex specific rate for male (7.4%) significantly differs from that of the female (3.6%). (X2 = 5.721, P<0.05). The occurrence of antigens to ASFV in the study area was determined by direct immunofluorescence (DIF). Nine out of 20 tissue samples tested from Plateau state were positive for ASFV antigens while 5 out of 6 tissue samples tested from Kaduna state were positive. Those tissues that tested negative for ASFV antigens by DIF were retested for virus deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The results showed that the 9 out of the 10 tissues tested were positive for virus DNA genome except one tissue (i.e. 1 spleen). This study indicates the presence of African swine fever (ASF) in Plateau and Kaduna states, with the conclusion that ASF may be a major cause of mortality limiting pig production.en_US
