dc.description.abstractThis dissertation is concerned with a discussion of various aspects of traffic assignment and the writing and development of a computer programme to investigate the effects of some of the factors influencing the solutions given by certain capacity restrained assignment techniques. A short review of the planning process is followed by a survey of modern traffic assignment processes with particular reference to capacity restrained methods, and a discussion of factors affecting these solutions. A detailed discussion of the assessment of the convergence of capacity restrained methods is included. Programmes are written to allow the use of three different loading methods and three different speed/flow relationships in the investigation of the approach to a solution of three different capacity restrained methods as indicated by five different measures of convergence. Suggestions are made for the development of the programmes and areas in which they may be used for further research into the functioning of capacity restrained traffic assignment techniques.en_US
