Abstract
The principles and applications of reduction to the pole of magnetic anomalies is analysed and demonstrated by applying the technique to the AEROMAGNETIC data of Zaria area, north central part of Nigeria. The data was obtained by digitizing six AEROMAGNETIC maps which covered the area and using the method of Silva(1986) a computer software is developed to perform the general three dimensional case. The effectiveness of the method is assessed using theoretical noise-free and noise-corrupted data. In both cases the method showed good results regardless of the latitude. After reducing the data to the pole, comparison made between the total field and the reduced to the pole maps indicates that the technique eliminates the dipolar nature of the anomalies. Also the presence of positive anomalies in the reduced to the pole map existing in most part of the area validates the assumptions of induced magnetization within the area. Interpretation of some prominent anomalies in the area indicates that the sources appear to be vertical intrusives and are granitic in nature. All these results shows that reducing magnetic fields to the earth's magnetic pole makes interpretation of magnetic anomalies easier, because the anomalies are not shifted as a result of the obliquity of the normal field.
