Abstract
A parasitological survey and immunological tests wore carried out to
detect the presence of Filarial worms, and or past experience with such
parasites in the population within the Bonu village area of Niger State,
Nigeria, Results show that the area probably falls within the hyperendemic
zone for Filariasis especially Onchocerciasis, Out of 150 people skin
snipped 63 of them were found to be heavily infected with Onchocerca volvulus.
This gives a percentage incidence of 42%. The incidence was found to be
higher among the adults. The male population also exhibited higher
incidence than the female population. 13% of the infected population
complained of eye sight defect. All those that complained cf eye sight
problems were 40 years of age or above.
Examination of day blood of 310 people gave a percentage incidence of
7.1 % of Dipetalonema perstans. Comparison of venepuncture with finger
pricks as to their sensitivity for detection of infection revealed no
significant difference between the two technics. Out of 89 specimens
collected by finger pricks, 7 (7.35%) had parasites in their blood while
out of 221 specimens collected by venepuncture, 15 (6.78%) had Microfilariae
in their blood.
Immunological tests using purified Dirofilaria imtnitis antigen and
soluble fraction of Onchocerca volvulus Microfilariae were performed.
IV
Higher Indirect hemagglutination antibody titers were obtained with purified
Dirofilaria immitis antigen. Higher antibody titers were recorded among
the male populations. The indirect fluorescent antibody technique
generally gave lower results when compared with IHA teste, i.Autofluorescence
was observed with Microfilariae. There was cross reaction with Onchocerca
volvulus Microfilariae and sera from people infected with Dipetalonema
perstans.
