Abstract
Analysis was carried out on seventeen oil samples namely, palm oils from Kano, Samaru, Funtua and Oyan, Sunflower oil made by Boulogue Cedex from France, Corn oil made by Lindenberg from Federal Republic of Germany, Salad oil, cookwell oil, Melon Seed oil (extracted in the laboratory) Groundnut oils from Samaru, Funtua and Kano respectively, The results show that, Coconut oil and palm kernels oils have the highest saponification values while the refined oils or the seed oils have the lower saponification values. It is evident from the results that all the refined oils, sunflower, salad, melon, cookwell, corn, coconut, and groundnut have high iodine numbers while coconut and palm kernel oils have the least iodine numbers. It is also evident from the result that acid value and percentage free fatty acid are very low for oils like, sunflower, salad, cotton, melon corn, groundnut and palm oils have high acid and percentage free fatty acids. Finally, the amount of trace elements found in the oils are lower in the refined oils than the oils which are obtained locally
