The study developed maize cob peat, prepared eleven different particle sizes of the peat and tested the adsorption capability of each particle size on dye solutions and textile effluents, with a view to determining the effective particle size(s) for industrial application. Each particle size of peat was soaked, squeezed and thoroughly washed to remove the dust and humin content. The cation exchange capacity of the peat was then determined. The textile effluents were characterised for pH, dissolved, suspended and total solids. The number of dye components in each textile effluent was determined using thin layer chromatography (TLC). Spectral characterisation of the textile effluents and dye solutions was also undertaken. When column experiments were undertaken, the particle sizes of 150 μm, 300 (am, and 355 μm were found to be quite effective, because using 4 g each of the particle sizes, it was found that 850 cm3 of dye samples of M and A at maximum dye house concentrations of 100 ppm was decolorised by the stated particle sizes to 11 ppm, 18 ppm, 23 ppm and 28 ppm for dye M and 13 ppm, 21 ppm, 27 ppm and 33 ppm for dye A. The same particle sizes decolorised 70 cm3 of the dye samples at concentrations of 2800 ppm to 58 ppm, 64 ppm, 79 ppm and 108 ppm for dye M and 111 ppm, 128 ppm and 186 ppm for dye A. Also when 40 cm3 of the crude effluents of PU and PS at absorbances of 0.460 and 0.340 respectively were administered on 4 g of each of the above particle sizes, the effluents were decolorised to absorbances of 0.055, 0.075, 0.160 and 0.155 for effluent PU and 0.012, 0.035, 0.048 and viien_US
