Abstract
The study sought to identify laboratory facilities and
equipment in the teaching of clothing and textiles in post
Primary institutions in Kaduna State, Hence the study focused
on the laboratory facilities available, the adequacy and
appropriateness of laboratory facilities and equipment, the
supply, purchase and maintenances of these laboratory facilities
and equipment.
The eight zonal structure for the operations of the Kaduna
State Ministry of Education were adopted for the sampling
procedure. Random sampling procedure was used to select
sixteen Post Primary institutions for the study from these
zonal areas.
The questioneers and observation data gathering procedure
were used for the study. Frequency distribution ratio and
percentages were used in the statistical analysis of the study.
Results from the study showed that some clothing and
textile teachers in Post Primary institutions did not qualify
to teach the subject, that is, they did not have clothing and
textile training background. Some reasons for the dislike
of the subject matter include difficulty in teaching the
subject and time and energy consuming. Reasons for the liking
the subject however, include the joy in making one clothes,
the creative experience and savings benefits from doing one's
clothes. Most laboratory facilities and equipment were
inadequate and inappropriate, the lack of space for practicals
such as fitting, cutting, free traffic and dressing mirrow
were apparant.
The foregoing, thus, have serious learning experiences
implication for the 6-3-3-4; educational system. Hence,
recommendations have been made to curb some of these
problem situation.
