Abstract
Graphic design problems found in billboard advertisement in Nigeria - Master of Arts Industrial Design - Date 1999 pages 92 Table 8 Photographs. 12 The effect of the springing up of small - scale Industries due to positive economic measures introduced in recent times in Nigeria led to the mass production of goods and services. The prospective consumers of these goods and services must be adequately informed. One of the ways by which this could be done is through advertisements, billboards for instance. Unfortunately, from the researcher's critical study of billboards and preliminary discussions held with some practicing designers and a section of the public, it was observed that some of the billboards had lot of design problems. These problems ranged from poor layouts, poor illustrations, and wrong selection of types, poor colour usage and so on. These problems prompted this research. The specific objectives of this research were to:- 1.. Identify design problems in billboards 2. Determine the root causes of such design defects 3. Identify solutions to some of the design problems interms of the ideal laws or principles of design being properly put to use. 4. Determine the criteria for the effectiveness of billboard advertising in Nigeria (from a design point of view).
