T The nutritive value of sorghum grains (Short Kaura(SK) variety) was explored in the development of culture media. The sorghum (SK) starch and proteineous materials were extracted, dried and subjected to amylase and pepsin hydrrolysis respectively. Dried powder each of bean husk, soybean, spent yeast and fish was treated with pepsin hydrolysis to obtained growth supplements. Sorghum starch, protein digests and growth supplements were reconstituted into varied media were used in liquid and solid foems to grow Staphylococcus aureus (NCTC 6571), Bacillus subtilis (NCTC 8241), Escherichia coli (NCTC 10418), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCTC 6750) and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). The growth of these micro-organisms were better in commercially prepared Nutrient broth than the sorghum broth. 20% (0.l03g/L glucose) sorghum broth gave the best growth and 40% (0.206g/L glucose) sorghum broth was the least. Sorghum broths with growth supplements performed better in supporting the growth of the test micro-organisms than the commercially prepared Nutrient broth. 35% (3.78/L protein) fish suppllement in sorghum broth gave better growth than the other formulations. On solidifying the formullated sorghum media with one percent agar, the resultant media also proved better in supporting the growth of the test micro-organisms than the commercially prepared Nutrient agar.en_US
