Abstract
Various approaches for computing cross sectional areas in earthworks are treated. Proofs of different formulae in the calculations are given, including some examples on the applications. Each method is analysed with sufficient depth in order to easily infer its merit and limitations. The methods, considered comparatively, are synthesized and their relative stregth and advantages effectively enunciated with examples. Estimation of earthworks volumes and rationalization of earthmoving patterns by the use of the Mass Haul Diagrams in construction economy are also treated. Recommendations on methods to adopt on every situation and circumstance are contained in the conclusion. Finally, advice is given about the professional relationship that should exist on site between the Civil Engineer and the Engineering Surveyor when executing an earthworks project.
