This study examined the influence of social media engagement on the self-esteem of adolescents in secondary schools in Daura Local Government Area, Katsina State. The study specifically explored the frequency of social media use, level of interaction, and content creation, as well as self-esteem dimensions including self-confidence, self-acceptance, and sense of personal value. A descriptive survey design was adopted. Data were collected from 321 students using a structured questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency distributions, percentages, and means. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the hypothesis for the study. Findings revealed that adolescents engaged with social media to a moderate extent, with the overall mean of engagement recorded at 2.99. Frequency of use (x̄ = 3.00) and level of interaction (x̄ = 3.08) were particularly high, indicating that students regularly check their accounts, interact with peers, and incorporate social media into their daily routines. Content creation and sharing scored a slightly lower mean of 2.89, suggesting moderate participation in posting original material. Analysis of self-esteem showed a moderate overall level among respondents (x̄ = 2.74). Self-confidence (x̄ = 2.82), selfacceptance (x̄ = 2.75), and sense of personal value (x̄ = 2.66) all fell within the moderate range, indicating that while students generally feel capable and valued, there remains room for improvement in self-perception. Regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between social media engagement and self-esteem (β = 0.462, p < 0.05), explaining 21.3% of the variance in self-esteem. The study concludes that social media engagement significantly and positively influences adolescents’ self-esteem, particularly through interactive activities such as liking, commenting, and messaging. Recommendations include guidance from parents, teachers, and counselors to promote responsible and constructive social media use, as well as integrating digital literacy programs to enhance adolescents’ psychological and social development.
