dc.description.abstractRiver Kubanni a major tributary of river Galma. recieves both organic and inorganic wastes through run-offs and seepage from some residential and agricultural areas of Tudun-Wada Zaria. Water, plankton and benthic samples were collected once a month from three stations on a stretch of the river, for eight months (February, 1994 - October, 19940. The physicochemical parameters, plankton and benthic composition were determined and correlated to one another. The distribution and composition of phytoplankton and benthic fauna are affected by variations through fluctuations in environmental variables such as temperature, velocity, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, total hardness, electrical conductivity and total dissolved matter. Low alkalinity results to low phytoplankton production while a rise in total dissolved matter results to increase in electrical conductivity and turbidity but a decrease of the benthic population. The presence of Oscillatoria sp, Euglena sp, Chironomous sp, Naids sp, Glossiphonia sp and the absence of Ephemeroptera in stations 2 and 3 are indicative of organic pollution in these stations. However, the river stretch is rich for fish production with respect to water hardness Tilapia and to some extent Alestes accumulated more trace metals than Clarias. Tilapia, may therefore be a better indicator species than Clarias for monitoring trace metal concentration in the aquatic ecosystem.en_US
