| dc.description.abstract | The strategic status of Kujama Barth Station (KES) as the only international gateway in Northern part of Nigeria cannot be over emphasised, as any failure will result in interruption of communications, but also the partial isolation of a large part of the country from the "Global Village". This thesis is concerned with the assessment of operational reliability of KES. Since reliability studies lean heavily on probabilty theorems, a compendium of relevant probability theorems were presented. Outage data for KES were obtained and the operation of the earth station was modelled as a discrete state, continuous-time Markov process. Based on this model, a structured computer program was developed in Turbo Pascal and reliability parameters of the entire KES system and its major sub-systems were generated from the program for the period 1989 to 1995. The results obtained were discussed and observations were made on operational reliability. The results were also persented in tabular forms and graphs, which establish the chronological trends in operational reliability of KES over the period under study. The optimum availability occurred in 1993 and the lowest availability in 1995. Based on these observations and the conclusions arrived at, recommendations were presented including the failure event and action form suggested by the author. It is hoped that the adoption of these recommendatios will help to improve the operational reliability of KES and ensure corporate perpetuity of NITEL Plc. | en_US |
