Abstract
The purpose of the study was to assess the degree or extent of effects of wind, horizontal visibility
and cloud cover on flight operations (air crash) in Kano and Abuja International airports.
Hourly records of wind, daily records of low horizontal visibilities in the range of 0-99, 100-199,
200-388 and 300-999,daily amount of cloud cover, both for Kano and Abuja Airports, and total
number of air crashes in Nigeria from 1986-2005 were collected from secondary and online
sources. Descriptive, relationships and significance in correlation statistical methods were
applied for both analyses and presentation of the data using Microsoft excel statistical package.
The significance of correlations was 99.8 % - 99.9 %.Trends revealed steady increase of weather
elements in Kano airport over the years, while higher increase in Abuja airport. Air crashes and
casualties in Nigeria are generally on the increase. While the world weather-related airline fatal
accidents and fatalities show general decrease trends in the number of crashes and casualties
over the years, the study reveals positive statistical relationship between weather parameters
and flight operations (air crash) at 95% confidence level. However, the degree of the
relationship is not significant. This implies that the effects these weather parameters have on
flight operations is insignificant, hence not solely responsible for plane accidents recorded in
Nigeria in recent years. Therefore, flight operations could possibly be more affected by human,
economic and mechanical factors. Emanating from the study, recommendations and suggestions
were made.
