Urban Growth affects land cover at local, regional and global scales. Like other towns in Nigeria, Jaji is growing at a very fast rate. The consequence of such urban growth if unplanned is the adverse effects on the environment. The aim of this research is to analyze the effect of urban growth on agricultural land, in Jaji town Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information (GIS) techniques. LandSat Thematic Mapper (TM) 1994, Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) of 2004 and Lansat 8 (OLI) data of 2016 were used. The datasets were processed and classified into land use/land cover classes using supervised classification technique in ArcGIS 10.1. The built-up area and Agricultural land were extracted separately and the rates of growth between the periods (1994-2016) were ascertained. The built-up areas for the four time periods were overlaid in order to derive the urban growth map. The results revealed that built-up increased from 6.87 Km2 in 1994 to 11.87 Km2 in 2016 while agricultural land reduced from 68.9 Km2 to 63.91 Km2 within this same period. The built-up in the study area was increasing at the rate of 3.05% yearly while the agricultural land declined at the rate of 0.32% per annum within the period (1994-2016) studied. The finding in this study reveals that Jaji town is experiencing gradual encroachment of urban growth into agricultural lands. If this gradual encroachment is not address early, it will lead to rapid loss of agricultural lands. This will lead to reduction in food supply or agricultural produce in the study area. It is therefore recommended that Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) technique which have proved to be efficient in the monitoring of urban growth and Agricultural activities be utilize efficiently to monitor urban growth encroachment into agricultural areas. This would help to control encroachment and reduce indiscriminate exploitation of Agricultural lands.en_US
