Abstract
',:: o analytical Studies of some Building Materials such as
soils fro.?. Birinin Kebbi, Zaria and Makurdi; clay from Tsambe,
Scioto, Ogbcl'iri.!Itak Ikot p.nd Durumi; Limestcns from Ifon; and
marble from Jakuru, have been carried out to study their chemical
composition* The analysis of the samples included the determination
of loss on ignition and the determination of SiO , Alo0^,
FGCV, CaO, MgO, KO, Na,0, Lio0, Ti^O, Po0_ and MnO^ (or Mn,.Oo in

case of cement samples). In addition, the insoluble residue and
sulphur trioxide* SO , were determined in case of the cement
Samples, Loss on ignition, insoluble residue, sulphur trioxide,
and th© main silica were determined gravimetrically; Alo0 , CaO
and MgO titrimetricallyj rec? dual silica, Fe 0 . Ti^O, Po0 and

IIn0o (or IJi 0 ) spectrophotometrically; v/hile the alkali oxides
ucro determined flame photometrically.
j?ho sa;. lo solutions used for the determination of all the
oi'-idos [except for the sulphur trioxide and the alkali oxides),
./ore prepared by tv/o decomposition methods, viz: the alkali
fusion (l'oC0 /u^CO ) followed by dissolution of the melt in
:.y:".roc':Ioric acid for soils, clays, limestones and marble; and
acid decomposition (HC1) for cements.
**ie sample solutions used for the determination of alkali
oxides (i:o0, Na 0, Lio0) were separately prepared by the acid
decomposition methods: nitric acid/sulphuric acid/hydrofluoric
