Abstract
The effects of poor water quality in Nigeria and the world at large seems to be on the increase, yet, there have not been much significant efforts to combat the menace except the provision of cost effective alternative sources of clean water sources. This study was onthe preliminary assessment of the various sources of water in Kano Metropoliswhere ninety six (96) water samples were collected fromopen wells, boreholes, tap water and sachet water sources in study area using systematic sampling techniques. Laboratory analysis was carried out to determine the level of concentration on pH, colour, total hardness, conductivity, calcium, magnesium, chlorides, sulphate, sodium, turbidity, copper, manganese, zinc, lead and iron. The Water Quality Index for the study area was analysed and the quality from each source was compared with the acceptable drinking water quality standards. The study showed spatial variations and significant difference in level of concentration between the various sources within the Metropolis.Throughout the study, all parameters tested for sachet water were found to be within permissible limits, which shows excellentwater qualitieswith the exception of sachet water source in Dala Local Government Area where iron was found at 0.04mg/l to be slightly above the standards.Iron and Manganese had concentrations above World Health Organization and National Standard for Drinking Water Quality permissible limits for boreholes, wells and tap water which were between the range of 1.55mg/l and 2.95mg/l respectively. The Water Quality Indexshowed that wells, boreholes and tap water sources which is greaterthan 100 expect for Nasarawa and Taruni which is between 76-100 were unsuitable for human consumption in which frequent consumption will cause severe health risks, but tap water source in Fagge Local Government Area just like sachet water source for the entire Metropolis which is between 0-25 showed that they were suitable for human consumption. The study recommends the need for government, communities and private individuals to work collectively in public enlightenment campaign on the dangers of poor water quality consumption, proper siting of wells and boreholes in residential areas, treatment and maintaining of existing water supply facilities.
