Abstract
The aim of the study is to find out the competencies of Library and Information Science (LIS)
teachers in teaching Information Communication Technology (ICT) Courses in tertiary
institutions in Bauchi state Nigeria. 3 research objectives guided the study, which are to
identify the availability of ICT facilities and infrastructure in tertiary institutions in Bauchi
state and also ascertain the level of ICT literacy and competency possessed by LIS lecturers in
tertiary institutions offering LIS in Bauchi state. The research design adopted for the study was
descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised 84 LIS lecturers in
tertiary institutions in Bauchi state. The instrument used for data collection was 5 set of ICT
teaching competencies design by the researcher based on literature review, 5 set of
questionnaire to ascertained the availability of ICT facilities available for teaching ICT and 4
set of questionnaire to determine the training needs of LIS teachers teaching ICT related
courses in tertiary institutions in Bauchi state. Descriptive and inferential statistics, percentage
were employed to answer the research questions. The data collected were analyzed and
interpreted in line with the objectives of the study. The study revealed that all the ICT
component in the curriculum of the National University Commission (NUC) benchmark and
the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) are been offered in all the tertiary
institutions in Bauchi state. On the other hand, majority of the teachers don’t have enough
competencies to teach ICT related courses in LIS. It was also revealed that LIS Schools don’t
have adequate facilities to teach ICT related courses. The study also discovered that LIS
lecturers need special training. The study concluded therefore, that LIS teachers do not have
all the competencies required to teach ICT related courses in LIS and strongly recommends
training and retraining to strengthen their competencies for teaching ICT related LIS courses
in tertiary institutions under study.
