Abstract
Industrial procurement function in Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company was examined. The function was found to traverse several functional departments within the organization and several parties outside. The diversity of the participants and the contributions required of them suggest that the function requires close and competent monitoring and coordination. To this end the system approach was developed in order to evaluate every facet of the function and come up with the best way to discharge it. The investigation revealed that the function can be efficiently discharged when certain improvements in Procurement, Stock Management, Users, Finance & Accounts, and Audit Departments are carried out. Also significant are the role of Management, Vendors and Government economic policies. It is concluded that the competitiveness of the organization as a business unit rests squarely on the efficient discharge of this function especially for Nigerian industries that depend heavily on imports. The success of the function on the other hand depends on the total understanding of every one concerned with it and the willingness to work towards its objectives.
