Abstract
Identification of potential sites for urban development in is one of the critical issues of planning. Site suitability analysis has become unavoidable for finding appropriate site for various developmental initiatives. This research work focused largely on land suitability assessment for urban development in Sokoto metropolis. Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) data of 90metres spatial resolution and land Sat-8 Satellite imagewere the data used for the study.SRTM data was used to produce the slope, aspect and drainage map for the study. Landsat 8 imagery was used to generate the land use and land cover through supervised classification. A Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) using the pair wise comparison in Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to weigh each of the factor map that influence site suitability for urban development. A weighted overlay in ArcGIS spatial analyst tool was applied to produce the site suitability map. The result of the study shows that crop land occupies the highest land cover with 52.3% (294.4sq. km), irrigation land is next occupying about 21.3% (119.9sq. km) of the area. The urban built-up land occupies 11.5% (64.8sq. km), the bare surface 11.1% (62.4sq. km) while vegetation is the least with 3.8% (21.5sq. km). the result also revealed that from the available area of 131.2 sq. km (23.3%) of the land fall under very low suitable sites for urban development, 55.7 sq. km (9.9%) was found to be low suitable sites, 79.4 sq. km (14.1%) of the total area is moderately suitable, while 102.5 sq. km (18.2%) of the area is highly suitable and 194.2 sq. km (34.5%) is very highly suitable sites. Therefore, the study recommends that the North, West and Eastern part of Sokoto metropolis should be considered as suitable area for new urban development and development should be directed to them.
