dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT The study investigated why top government functionaries still hold traditional rulers in high esteem inspite of many allegations of misdeeds against them. It also examined the role they can play in the developmental efforts of Local Governments as envisaged in the 1976 Reforms. The objective was to bring to light the main sources of powers and influences of these rulers on public officers despite several administrative and political changes that had taken place since 1976. The work also considered the workability of the suggested option of abolishing traditional institutions against the evidence gathered from our area of study. Some of our findings are that traditional rulers still command high level of respect among the ruling elites and the mass of the people in Bauchi State. Inspite of this respect however, people are not willing to accept the traditional rulers’ active participation in the administrative, executive and legislative functions of Local Governments. The issue of relevance is neither here nor there because the traditional rulers are only relevant to modern Local Government Administration only to the extent to which they support the status quo. | en_US |
