dc.description.abstractSamples of five commercial wines were analysed for alcohol content (percent by volume), total sulphur dioxide, ash content and total acidity. Other parameters determined were ash alkalinity, tannins, pH and metal ions - potassium, sodium, magnesium, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, cadmium and lead. Results of percent alcohol content, by volume gave higher values than their equivalents inscribed on the bottles in degrees proof. Total sulphur dioxide for the various samples ranged from 129.61 + 0.49 to 260.99 ± 0.04 mg/l; and only White Lady (Samples E1 and E2) had total sulphur dioxide within the range stipulated by the United States Standards for Wines. Dubonnet (Samples D1 and D2) showed the lowest total sulphur dioxide content. The amounts of tannins detected in all the wine samples were lower than previously published results. However, values were as expected higher for red or colored wines than for white ones. Cadmium was detected only in the tonic wines - Dubonnet and Ambassadeur, Apart from Sample E1 (White Lady) lead content was found to be far in excess of the stipulated safe content.en_US
