dc.description.abstract | Some biological aspects of the fisn families - Mochokidae, ridae and Mormyridae were investigated in Zaria area, Les were got from the "Sabongari" market in Zaria from month of June to December, 1981. Eight rnormyrid, three bagrid and one mochokid species were found in the samples. The fishes were found to feed on variety of food items. The mormyrids were principally insectivorous with exceptions of Mormyrops deliciosus which was piscivorous and Hyperopisus that was principally herbivorous. in the bagrid, Auchenog1anis occidentalis depended highly on immature insects, while Bagrus docmac was principally piscivorous. The only mochokid, Synodontis schall fed principally on immature insects, seeds and algae. There were more females in the samples than the males, The fishes were found to breed during the rains, between June and September. The fecundity was estimated and was found to be high for Synodontis schall and Marcusensis senegalensis. The length-weight relationship indicated allometric growth for most of the species. | en_US |
