Abstract
This thesis is about precipitation effectiveness indices and millet yield in two local Government Areas of Kano state. This study is aim on the following specific objective: To determine the major precipitation effectiveness parameters that influence millet yield in the two study areas, to determine the relationship between the derived precipitation effectiveness indices and millet yield for the two stations and determine the combined effects to the climatic elements on millet yield to the two stations. For the purpose of this research two sets of data are required. Daily rainfall records (mm) and millet yield data (kg/ha), from 1988-2007. The data were sourced from Kano Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA) and Hadejiajama’re River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA). This recommends the practice of using the multiple regression analysis when subjecting the climate crop yield relationship for each climate element separately. The results obtained shows that the coefficients of the four variables are significant in the analysis. The variables are: total rainfall, hydrologic ratio, length of the rainy season, and onset dates of rains. The four variables account for 62.% of the variation in the yield of millet at Kura. While at Dambatta the four variables account for 73.5% of the variation in the yield of millet. The study also recommends. The following measures: application of fertilizer to improve soil fertility and productivity, the use of modern agricultural techniques to boost crop yield and application of insecticides to reduce the effects of pest on crops.
