dc.description.abstractThe construction industry continues to record a high prevalence of accidents compared to other industries. Although previous research efforts have developed different approaches towards improving the safety performance of the construction industry, lack of records has been identified as a major impediment to addressing the safety challenges faced by construction workers. In developing countries, poor accident records management practices continue to be a major barrier to the realization of any meaningful improvement in construction health and safety performance. This research assesses the record management practices of construction accidents in Nigeria. Quantitative research approach was adopted, using structured questionnaires to collect data from safety officers and construction project managers of small and medium construction firms in Abuja, Kaduna and Kano. Findings revealed that most of these companies do not have a structured accident record management system and there is no legislation mandating them to record and report accidents and their causal factors to any government agency. It was recommended that stakeholders should put in place a proper accident reporting and record management system in the Nigerian construction industry to achieve significant safety improvement.
