Abstract
This study investigated the adoption and academic use of Google Workspace among
undergraduate students in Nigeria, specifically examining usage patterns, perceived benefits,
and operational challenges. The study sought to determine the extent to which undergraduate
students utilize Google Workspace for academic work, identify the most frequently used Google
Workspace tools, examine the perceived benefits and challenges associated with their use, and
propose strategies for improving the effective utilization of Google Workspace for academic
purposes. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the research employed a
descriptive survey design. Data were gathered from 264 undergraduate students at Federal
University Lokoja using a structured questionnaire. Participants were selected through
purposive sampling from a target of 300 respondents, yielding an 88.0% response rate.
Descriptive statistics, including mean scores and standard deviations, were used to analyze the
data. The findings revealed a relatively high level of engagement with the platform for
academic activities. Google Drive and Google Docs emerged as the most frequently used
applications for assignments and document storage, while Google Sheets and Forms recorded
significantly lower adoption rates. Respondents viewed the platform as highly beneficial for
enhancing collaboration, productivity, and accessibility across devices. However, the study
identified critical barriers to optimal use, most notably unstable internet connectivity, technical
difficulties, and gaps in advanced digital skills. The study concludes that while Google
Workspace holds immense potential for improving academic productivity, its effectiveness is
currently hindered by infrastructural deficits. Consequently, the study recommends targeted
institutional investments in internet infrastructure, the integration of cloud tools with Learning
Management Systems (LMS), and the implementation of comprehensive digital literacy
training.
