Abstract
The profile of surface water pollution in Zaria was studied between August 1998 and July 1999, a
period which covered both the rainy and dry seasons. Surface water in the Zaria area is supplied
and distributed by a combination of three rivers including river Kubanni, river Sheka and river
Galma. Monthly samples were collected from twelve sites located on the rivers studied during the
period. Standard methods were used throughout for the measurement of physical and chemical
parameters of samples. The results reveal seasonal variations with respect to conductivity, solids
and nitrate. Results also show considerable variations parameters that relate to phosphate, BOD,
COD especially at sites that receive waste discharges. These result show that the rivers of this
study are getting polluted as shown by BOD (249 ppm), nitrate (23.6mg/L), phosphate (18.6). A
monitoring program on these rivers is recommended.
