dc.description.abstractThis study was conducted on ‗An Assessment of the Incidence Desertification in the Extreme Northern Parts of Katsina State‘. Satellite imageries were used to obtain results for vegetation decline using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The satellite imageries used were Landsat Mss 1976, Landsat TM 1988, Landsat TM 1999 and Landsat ETM+. The observed change for vegetation in hectares was 85.7% in 1976, 77.9% in 1988, 58.2% in 1999 and 50.5% in 2006 which showed that the vegetation was declining while vegetation was increasing. Rainfall data was also used to test for relationship between NDVI and rainfall. The result showed that there was decline in vegetation from each decade. There was a positive correlation between the NDVI and rainfall. Questionnaires were administered to capture people‘s perception of desertification and its impact on yields. The results showed that desertification is a menace which the people are aware of and have strategies to keep it under control. The study also showed that desertification has negative impact on agricultural yields. Recommendations proffered include improved agricultural practices, tree planting campaigns, participation in the great green world programme, alternative forms of energy for cooking, awareness to climate change, availability of remotely sensed data and poverty reduction.en_US
